As a child, Bruce Wayne witnessed his parents gunned down right in front of his very eyes. Traumatized by the event, Wayne nonetheless used it as a driving force in his life, forever dedicating himself to the eradication of crime in order to avenge the death of his parents. He spent years traveling the world, schooling himself in science, criminology, and various forms of armed and unarmed combat. After training in Asia for some time, Bruce returned to Gotham and, with the resources of his company, began a one-man war on crime as the Batman, a mystery considered by many to be an urban legend. |

A former British intelligence agent, Alfred Pennyworth experienced a career change in his life when his father died. His father had been a loyal butler to the Wayne family and asked Alfred to take over for him. Choosing to honor his father's final wish, Alfred began serving the Waynes, becoming a trusted friend to Thomas and Martha. So much so that upon their death, they gave Alfred custody of Bruce. Alfred is one of a select few people who know Bruce's double life and is his closest, most trusted confidant. |

Corruption in Gotham extends to the highest echelons of power, reaching all the way up to the office of police commissioner as well as City Hall. Lt. James Gordon has been a veteran of the Gotham Police Force for many years and prides himself on being one of the few cops in the department who has never participated in any illicit activities. However because of that, he often feels powerless in a city as corrupt as Gotham, but still does his best to fight against corruption. With the appearance of the Batman, Gordon has found an ally in his fight. |

A childhood friend of Bruce Wayne's, Harvey Dent comes from a well-off family in Gotham. After graduating from Harvard Law School, Dent returned to his hometown, choosing to take a low-paying job in the Gotham District Attorney's office as opposed to taking a high salary in his father's extremely lucrative law firm. The Waynes were like parents to a young Harvey, and he also dedicated himself to the pursuit of justice like Bruce, but choosing to work within the system. Recently, he was elected as Gotham's new District Attorney. |

A trusted friend of Thomas Wayne, Lucius Fox is a brilliant engineer and savvy businessman who was appointed by Thomas to run the day-to-day operations of Wayne Enterprises. Following the death of the Waynes, Fox was forced into a more subservient position by the company's board of directors. But with the return of Bruce Wayne to Gotham, Lucius has once more taken on a prominant role at the company. He mourns the death of his close friend, all these years later, and aids the Batman in the war on crime by helping him use some of the company's resources to fund Bruce's campaign. |
